Life, memory, and our experiences don't unfold like a story with a beginning and end or like a joke with a setup and punchline. In Avoidance of Obstacles, a video piece comprised of three different female stand-up comedians explores the idea that awkward, vulnerable, open comedy might resemble a more true representation of our experiences. As a series of cuts featuring stand-alone punchlines and gags without setup, the piece presents an alternative to the narrative whole—perhaps we don't see the whole picture because there never was one.
